A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
