American Online Influencer Penalized Following Large-Scale Electric Bike Gathering on Iconic Australian Bridge

New South Wales authorities have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and handed out two driving violation citations for alleged reckless operation after a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during peak-hour traffic on Tuesday.

The Event: An Illegal Gathering

A group of around 40 people riding electric bikes and motorbikes travelled along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly then turned around and traveled through the city’s CBD and Haymarket.

"This had a risk of people to be injured and killed," remarked a senior police official David Driver on the following day.

Law enforcement indicated they did not chase right away the riders out of concerns for public safety but instead located the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Penalties Issued for Content Creator

On Saturday, police announced they had issued the US social media influencer who goes by the influencer, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a penalty of $562 and three demerit points per notice, connected to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality is said to have over 3.4m followers on YouTube and over 1.2 million on the social media app.

Influencer's Comments

The online figure gave comments to a local publication recently after the incident gained traction on digital platforms, stating he regretted giving "bike life" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he said. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to abide by the laws and norms of the city. When I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to say hi near the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, an illegal act. Or we turn around, essentially, before entering the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to go back."

Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules

The spate of electric bicycles on streets across the country has sparked growing calls for stricter rules. A senior government official, the minister, recently said that non-compliant electric bikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," he stated. "We must ensure we prevent these things coming into the country [and] officers are granted the authority to crack down, to take them away, to destroy them, to destroy them."

NSW recorded over two hundred injuries related to electric bikes in the previous year. However, in the initial half of the following year, that number jumped to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
