Arnaud Kalimuendo Scores as Forest Claim Nostalgic Triumph Over Malmö
“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed through the ground as Forest followers celebrated another result against Malmö. A great deal has transpired since Francis's decisive header secured the European Cup back in the year 1979, but the club still hold dear those glorious moments. Similarly, major changes have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest appearing reinvigorated and securing a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of advancing in the Europa League.
Gaining Momentum with Third Consecutive Victory
For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third straight triumph across all competitions and further built on the momentum gained from last weekend’s stunning victory at Liverpool. While this match was a reminder of the club's European Cup triumph in spirit, the game itself was free of any significant tension or jitters.
This was an event filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive meeting between the teams since the European Cup final 46 years ago.
The home side fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their visiting opponents, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Swedish club’s team from that time were also present. Both teams shared a dinner together before the match. Forest legends and their teammates received a tumultuous welcome when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before the start, and a characteristically superb display was shown in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“30th May 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left,” read half of a large tifo, in block capitals. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the players emerged from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second brilliant display depicted Clough observing events beside his right-hand man Peter Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.
Control from the Start
So, Forest had drunk in those beautiful memories, but what about the performance on the night? It was pretty good, too. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo fired an attempt off target inside the opening moments and built a two-goal advantage by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who joined Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defence captained by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest defender Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home with his right foot from the edge of the box to score his first goal since March.
Second Goal Seals Control
The scorer was involved in the team's next goal on the brink of half-time, too, his free header saved by Malmö’s goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to convert the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and only his second outing since September, was the catalyst, chipping a delicious ball towards Yates at the far post.
Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned aside off Malmö defender Rösler, son of former Manchester City striker Uwe, and an free the defender also earlier had a powerful header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who returned in place of the ex- Villa goalie Olsen.
Opponent's Difficulties
This was the Swedish side's initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they struggled to equal Forest’s energy. Forest made it 3-0 when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a volley stopped, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious effort off target from 30 yards. It was one of those evenings. The manager, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton, implemented multiple alterations from the team that stunned the Reds at their ground recently, when they also netted three times, though he called on substitutes and Igor Jesus during the final period.
Smooth Night for the Team
It proved a hiccup-free evening for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw Murillo with the match already boxed off and subsequently introduced teenage full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. He discussed the club legends supplying “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the current crop demonstrated they are capable of a few nuggets of excitement, too.
