A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the blast was found shortly later. The trio have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene revealed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was under an removal notice due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member triggered the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast directly hit our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to reporters, mentioning that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had died in the performance of their duties.
