A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block in the background assisted us verify the footage.
Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
