Grief as Beloved South African DJ Gunned Down in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country battling entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Authorities reported the forty-year-old media personality was approached by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose of the attack has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, police said.
How It Happened
Police revealed that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a building close to the Carlton Centre.
He had devoted time at the building supervising the setup of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, it was reported.
"Authorities believe the man was confronted by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," an official report said.
Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and wearing what appeared to be a guard's attire shooting on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.
Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.
Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.
Call for Public Assistance
Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the attack, and police have been following their trail to find their location," added an official.
Outpouring of Grief
His family member, a close relative, expressed the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"Words fail me. I am shattered," were her words.
"We know he was a voice for many people. He spoke out bravely about subjects not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."
She urged the community to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the incident, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, particularly for Stock's three sons.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a South African TV network.
Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was active in various business ventures, including private security, supplying VIP protection services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in building administration and participated in building evictions.
National Shock
His killing has shocked the country and prompted an flood of condolences from his audience, the government and political parties.
A cabinet official remarked he was angry and saddened by Stock's murder.
"He expressed his views fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my decisions as a public official. He was a true embodiment of who we should be," he stated.
A party figurehead commented the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A industry leader said that "Stock was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a gifted communicator, a true devotee of sound and a kind-hearted individual who brought joy and energy to every performance. His commitment to his craft left an indefinable mark."
In a release, the channel he worked for said Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his legacy "will live on".
