Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
