Pacific Bluefin Fish Commands Historic Price of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the calendar year.
The top bid for the 243kg fish came from the company of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants domestically and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable bidder at the traditional new year's auction.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.
Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
After the auction, the winner told the press that he was "surprised at the amount," adding, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed in no time."
This most recent acquisition tops his previous record purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Even after previously commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his own record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously known for exorbitant prices. Last year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its restaurants throughout the country.
The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
From Auction to Plate
The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the winner's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've begun the year in a good way after eating something so auspicious as the year starts," shared one elated customer.
