Three Lions Coach Reveals The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach was playing at a lower division club. Currently, his attention is fixed to assist Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His journey from player to coach commenced as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his purpose.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a reputation with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs took him to elite sides, plus he took on roles with national teams across multiple countries. His players include big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour all the time, they both challenge limits. The approach include player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and building a true team. He stresses “Team England” and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We strive to own the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. We must to not only anticipate of changes and to lead and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We have to play a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear during that time. It’s to take it from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To develop a process for effective use in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured qualification by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This is the time to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.

“We are both certain that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects from the top division,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the adaptability, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to operate as they do in club games, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts for managers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data now. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

His desire to get better knows no bounds. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, as his cohort featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – was published. Frank was one of those convinced and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

The next manager with the club was Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
