Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Ace Sets Aside His Ego Outside.

One snub did the trick. A second one and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, even if it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.

The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is a matter of harnessing it in the right way. Individual quality is important but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when celebrity dominates. Nevertheless, a point has been made.

The midfielder was given food for thought after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched the national side book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach talk about appreciating the squad's spirit and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for his club against Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Jude possesses that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone need to help him and create an environment where he can use his drive against rivals and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”

The star dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted playmaker who needs support and direction. He has not played for the national team since spring and has struggled to hit the heights recently but Tuchel had to consider the player after his performance in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund this week.

The question, though, is how to use the various creators at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to select Cole Palmer once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be excessive? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's game as a result.

It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it harms the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”

He agreed there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is additionally so used to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel mentioned one star bursting through for tap-ins and the other netting goals from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options if Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to get the understanding with his teammate going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to score in an international match against Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” he stated. He does not shy away to speak frankly. There is still a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to start against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an even better one.
